Williamsburg Parks and Rec Pinks the Parks for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

WILLIAMSBURG, VA. – Williamsburg Parks and Recreation Department will support and bring awareness to Breast Cancer Awareness month by “Pinking the Park” at Kiwanis Park and Quarterpath Park during the month of October.  Staff have painted the foul lines and bases pink as well as painting a large pink ribbon in the outfield.  Regardless of who you are, Breast Cancer Awareness is a team you always root for!

“Youth sports are so important to the kids in our community and to adults as well. At Kiwanis Park, you have girls on the field playing softball while, at the same time, you can have moms in the stands who are fighting for their lives” said Robbi Hutton, Director of Williamsburg Parks and Recreation.

A portion of the fence at Kiwanis Park located at 125 Longhill Road in Williamsburg, VA is adorned with pink ribbons to honor and remember those who have faced the struggles of breast cancer.  Program participants and their families are invited to participate in the “Strike Out Breast Cancer” display by tying a ribbon to the fence and add the honoree’s name to the ribbon during Girls Youth Softball games.

“Every Parks and Recreation employee has family members, friends, neighbors, or simply know someone touched by this pervasive form of cancer,” she said.  “Through our effort, we hope that local residents will be proactive with their health screening and seek treatment they may need.”

The Parks and Recreation department will also have a Pink Ribbon Honor and Remembrance Wall at the Quarterpath Recreation Center to remember those that are cancer survivors, currently fighting, or lost the battle to cancer.  Come post a free breast cancer ribbon provided by the recreation department.

Per the National Breast Cancer Foundation website, “Exercise boosts the immune system and helps you to keep your weight in check. With as little as three hours of exercise per week, or about 30 minutes a day, a woman can begin to lower her risk of breast cancer. This doesn’t require going to a gym either. Power walking is more than sufficient!”  Join our free walking club every Monday – Friday from 8:00 am – 1:00 pm in the Quarterpath Recreation Center gymnasium.   Walkers keep track of how many laps they walk (11 laps = 1 mile) with beads (pink beads this month!) and then record them on the sign-in sheet. The laps are then translated into miles.  Walkers are encouraged to walk at their own pace in the comfort of our air conditioned / heated gymnasium.
