CHESAPEAKE — Hampton Roads Academy used a quick-strike offense in the first half to bash Greenbrier Christian Academy 54-25 Friday night in high school football.
Kahleef Jimmison, who finished with 152 yards rushing and 198 passing on 9 of 16 tosses, got the party started in the team’s first 8-on-8 football game of the season. He shimmied and faked out defenders to dash 52 yards and a touchdown on the opening play of the game. He would add two more TD runs during the contest.
On its next possession, the Navigators (2-4) moved from their 19 to the 30 before Jimmison found Messiah Russell for a 70-yard strike to make it 13-0. Not wasting any time on a third set of plays, HRA’s Ryan Arient motored 52 yards, setting up Jalen Norton’s 6-yard TD run. That made it 19-0 with less than 9 minutes gone in the opening frame.
The Gators (1-5) closed to 19-8, but HRA came right back, bridging the first and second periods. Jimmison found Russell for a 40-yard strike on the first play capped it off with a 14-yard pitch and catch with Nathan Bagley.
The teams traded touchdowns and, with 8 seconds left in the half, the snap on an HRA punt sailed over Bagley’s head and through the end zone for a Greenbrier safety, cutting the margin to 34-18. That would be as close as the Gators would come, as Jalen Norton and Yassir Wiggins caught two more Jimmison TD passes in the third quarter.
Gators QB Luke Bussel led all rushers with 222 yards on 16 carries, but he couldn’t penetrate the end zone. Instead, Quinton Wynn (twice) and Hunter Davis carried the ball in for the host team. Bussel, who hit on 2 of his first 5 pass attempts, misfired on his last 17 tosses, the last being intercepted by sophomore Dylan Burns.
The Navigators travel to Charlotteville on Friday to meet St. Anne’s Belfield in another 8-man contest.
