Yesterday at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Hampton Roads Academy won the VISAA Division II boys track and field championship. The Navigators defeated defending champion Peninsula Catholic to claim their first state track title.
Senior Jack Teagle was named the Best Field Event Performer for the meet. Teagle won the high jump (6-2) and the 110 meter high hurdles (15.68), tying the HRA record in the former event and in breaking his own record in the latter. Teagle, who will continue his track and field career at Washington and Lee University next year, also anchored the victorious 4×400 relay team (3:38.02). He rounded out his day with a second place in the long jump (19-6.75) and third places in the triple jump (40-1.25) and 300m hurdles (43.26).
Fellow senior Devone Humphrey won the long jump in convincing fashion, with a 21-3.5 performance that was over a foot longer than his closest competitor–his teammate, Teagle. Humphrey added second place finishes in the 100 meters (11.34) and 200 meters (23.34).
Matthew Walker established a new Navigator record (40.84) en route to a first place finish in the 300m hurdles. Walker, a junior, also won the triple jump (41-11.25) and ran a blistering third leg for the champions’ 4×400 relay squad (45.67).
Juniors Jalen Norton and Cameron Fazio rounded out the 4×400 relay team. Norton also completed a podium sweep for the Navigators with a second place finish in the triple jump (40-2).
Sophomore Tate Tanguy, junior Adrian Schrader, and senior Grant Stokes joined Humphrey on a silver medal-winning 4×100 relay team. Stokes also claimed third place in the 200 meters (23.56).
The Navigator girls placed fifth, with podium finishes from senior Alexis Forbes in the discus (90-6) and junior Ayla McBreen in the 100m hurdles (18.69).
