Grill Fire Damages Balconies in Marlbank Farm Neighborhood in York County

YORK COUNTY — A grill fire damaged two balconies at a residence in the 200 block of Yorkview Road in Yorktown Friday afternoon.

According to the York County Department of Fire and Life Safety, personnel were dispatched at approximately 5 p.m. to a reported house fire in the Marlbank Farm neighborhood of Yorktown.

Crews observed an active fire on the first-floor balcony of the residence, fire officials said. The fire had heavily involved the balcony and was impacting the underside of the second-floor balcony above. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire.

Officials said Fire and Life Safety personnel conducted a thorough investigation of the interior of the home, finding smoke conditions, but no extension of fire. The residence was ventilated, and the occupants were able to safely re-enter the home.

The cause of the fire was determined to be a gas grill located on the first-floor balcony. Fire officials said the York County Building Official will be evaluating both balconies for structural safety.

One occupant sustained minor injuries, according to Fire and Life Safety, and was evaluated by on-scene medics and declined further medical treatment.

The Newport News Fire Department provided fire station backfill, officials said.
