No Injuries After Trash Chute Fire at Walmart in York County

TABB — The York County Department of Fire and Life Safety responded to a trash chute fire Wednesday afternoon at the Walmart in the Tabb area of the county.

According to York County Fire and Life Safety, personnel were dispatched to a report of a fire at the Walmart located in the 2600 block of George Washington Memorial Highway just before 1 p.m. Wednesday. Crews were directed to a trash chute located near the rear of the building, where they encountered minor smoke and fire, officials said. The remainder of the building was surveyed to ensure there was no smoke or fire inside the store.

The fire was quickly extinguished, and measures were taken to ensure there was no risk of the fire reigniting, officials said. The affected area was also ventilated to clear the smoke.

The building did not require evacuation, and at no time was the public in danger, officials added. There were no injuries.

Assistance was provided by the Newport News Fire Department.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
