HAMPTON/NORFOLK — The Virginia Department of Transportation will conduct routine tide gate testing at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel beginning at 2 a.m. on Sunday.
Motorists traveling on Interstate 64 to the HRBT during this time should expect to be stopped for up to 60 minutes in each direction. To avoid delays, VDOT suggests motorists should use the Interstate 664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel as an alternate route.
The test slated for Dec. 14 are to ensure tunnel facilities are prepared for possible adverse weather conditions.
Crews will first test the eastbound gates, then the westbound gates.
Full directional closures are as follows:
- 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. — all eastbound traffic stopped
- 3 a.m. to 4 a.m. — all westbound traffic stopped
Before hitting the road, VDOT advises using its free 511 Virginia traffic tools, or the free 511-integrated Waze GPS app, to check for the most up-to-date road and travel conditions. VDOT’s 511.vdot.virginia.gov website and mobile app offer information about construction, traffic, incidents, and congestion, as well as access to traffic cameras, weather-related impacts and more.
