Train Hits Vehicle at Crossing in James City County, 1 Dead

JAMES CITY COUNTY — A person died Monday evening after their vehicle was struck by a train at a railroad crossing in James City County.

According to Virginia State Police, the crash occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Peach and Peninsula Streets.

Preliminary investigations reveal a white 2019 Toyota Highlander driven by 32-year-old Sarah Jones Mazariegos of Peach Street, Williamsburg, crossed the railroad tracks at a private road crossing into the path of an Amtrak train carrying 90 passengers. Police said the driver failed to stop at the sign controlling the crossing and failed to yield the right of way to the oncoming train.

The driver of the Highlander succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash, according to police. No one aboard the train was injured.

James City County Police and Fire Departments also responded to the scene.  Virginia State Police assumed primary responsibility for the investigation as of 6 p.m.
