JAMES CITY COUNTY — The driver involved in a fatal incident on Merrimac Trail in James City County that saw one pedestrian injured and another killed after they were struck by a vehicle Feb. 25 has been charged.
Following a thorough investigation and consultation with the Williamsburg/James City County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, the driver, 60-year-old Delana Greenhow of York County, was charged and served on the evening of March 4 with one count of Hit and Run Resulting in Death.
According to officials, on the evening of Feb. 25, the James City County Police and Fire Departments responded to the 9300 block of Merrimac Trail for a report of two pedestrians struck by a vehicle. On arrival, officers located a female with injuries who reported that she and a male companion had been walking westbound in the westbound lanes of Merrimac Trail when they were struck from behind by a vehicle. The vehicle continued driving and left the scene.
The male pedestrian, identified as 43-year-old Kenneth Jackson Jr. of Newport News, was not immediately located, prompting a search of the area. After locating the victim, officers initiated life-saving measures until relieved by James City County Fire personnel. Jackson Jr. was pronounced dead At 8:07 p.m., officials said.
The female pedestrian was transported to Riverside Doctors’ Hospital Williamsburg with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Department’s Traffic Unit assumed responsibility for the investigation, police said, and the Williamsburg/James City County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office also responded to the scene.
While responding officers were investigating, officials said the Peninsula Regional Dispatch Center received a call at 7:44 p.m. from a woman in York County reporting she had been involved in a collision, possibly with a deer, on Merrimac Trail near the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail. Officers responded to her residence and determined that the damage to her vehicle was consistent with the collision that resulted in the pedestrian’s death and that the caller had been the driver. The vehicle was seized and transported for further analysis, police said.
