JAMES CITY COUNTY – James City County has received approval from the Virginia Department of Transportation to install Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras in work zones on Interstate 64.
County officials say the cameras will go up within the month and plan to share an installation date once it’s set.
Once installed, the cameras will run a 30-day warning period, during which drivers caught speeding will receive warnings rather than tickets. Full enforcement begins after that.
The cameras are typically active only when workers are present in the zone. They’re programmed to ticket drivers going 10 mph or more over the posted limit and will come down once construction is finished.
County officials say the goal is to slow drivers down and protect road crews working along the interstate.
