PCAA Celebrates World Arts at Christopher Newport University

The Peninsula Chinese American Association recently participated in the Newport News 2025 World Arts Celebration Festival held at Christopher Newport University on Oct. 25.

Members of the Peninsula Chinese American community presented traditional Chinese folk dances and Tai Chi demonstrations.

In addition, the Association hosted a cultural exhibition booth on Ferguson Lawn, where visitors could view displays highlighting Chinese heritage and participate in making traditional Chinese good luck lanterns to take home, the organization said..

PCAA is a nonprofit organization established over forty years ago to promote Chinese culture and oversee a Chinese Language School on the Peninsula.

Rescheduled Astronomy Event at Machicomoco State Park 

Friends of Machicomoco State Park announced that the October Astronomy in the Park event cancelled due to rain has been rescheduled for Saturday, Nov. 8.

Partnering with the NASA Skywatchers, the event will start at 5 pm and run until 9 pm. The Skywatchers, based out of NASA Langley, will be on hand to discuss and explore the night sky with park visitors.

Visitors should be able to view various celestial bodies, including Comet Lemmon and Saturn, through telescopes provided by the Skywatchers club. During the May event at the park, visitors were able to see several galaxies with the club’s telescope and view detailed images of the sky using advanced astrophotography equipment.

The event will be held at the park’s Interpretive Area, which has ample parking and modern restrooms. Visitors may want to bring a camp chair to relax while they enjoy the sky. A $5 per vehicle park entry fee can be paid at the self-pay station located at the entrance of the park. The event is weather-dependent.

Chesapeake Bay Writers to Hold End-of-Year Celebration; Local Author Mingle and Meet 

Chesapeake Bay Writers will hold its annual End-of-Year Celebration Saturday, Nov. 8, at Sal’s by Victor in Williamsburg.

The gathering, taking place from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., will celebrate CBW authors and their achievements while enjoying good food, and is described as the perfect occasion to mingle and meet with local authors.

York County Household Chemical/Computer Recycling, Paper Shredding Event Set for Saturday

The last VPPSA collection event of the year in York County will take place on Saturday Nov. 8, from 8 a.m. to noon on County Drive off of Goodwin Neck Road.

According to the county, acceptable materials are those typically found in a home environment, such as household maintenance and cleaning products, paints, fuels, automotive chemicals, and lawn and garden products.

The following computer items will also be accepted at this event: Computers; Desktop and laptop computers, servers, computer monitors, cell phones, computer wiring, desktop printers including multifunction printers or “All in Ones”, fax machines, and desktop photocopiers and scanners. Note that only the computer items listed will be accepted. Televisions are not accepted.

In addition to the services listed above, the county said citizens have the opportunity to shred their personal paperwork on-site.  A shredding truck will be provided for citizens to bring up to five boxes of paperwork to be shredded.  Staple and paperclip removal is not necessary, however binders, three-ring notebooks, accordion files and other metal objects are not acceptable to include in shredding materials.

At the collection, A VPPSA employee will ask which city or county you live in, and what materials you’ve brought. Proof of residency may be required. VPPSA staff will unload your vehicle — stay in your vehicle unless requested to do otherwise.

Virginia General Assembly Launches New, Redesigned Website

The Clerks of the Virginia House of Delegates and Senate of Virginia recently announced the official launch of the Virginia General Assembly’s newly redesigned website.

According to the announcement, the redesigned site offers a more intuitive user experience, faster navigation, and exclusive content designed to better inform citizens.  The new — and shorter — web address is: vga.virginia.gov.

The launch of the new website is the first of several initiatives coming this year aimed at increasing public access, awareness and engagement with the Virginia General Assembly and the Virginia State Capitol, according to the announcement.

New features of the website include:

  • Intuitive Navigation: A user-friendly layout that allows for quick access to key information.
  • Mobile Responsiveness: Fully optimized for viewing on all devices, including smartphones and tablets.
  • Full ADA compliancy: Website meets the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA standard, providing equal digital access for people with disabilities.
  • Improved Online Content: Some of the many new features of the revamped website include:  a virtual tour of the Capitol Building; enhanced online schedules; and improved information for tourists, engaged citizens and students.

Hampton Roads Leases Completed by Cushman & Wakefield | Thalhimer

Cushman & Wakefield | Thalhimer recently reported the following recent lease transactions in the Hampton Roads area:

  • Planet Fitness leased 29,293 square feet of retail space at Poquoson Shopping Center, 460 Wythe Creek Road, in Poquoson. David Machupa, Ed Kimple, and Eric Stanley handled the lease negotiations on behalf of the tenant.
  • NPL A Centuri Company leased 7,500 square feet of industrial space at 1729-C George Washington Memorial Highway in Yorktown. Clay Culbreth handled the lease negotiations on behalf of the landlord and the tenant.
  • Price Point Outlet leased 2,450 square feet of retail space at Candle Factory, 7521 Richmond Road, in Williamsburg (James City County). Ellis Colthorpe handled the lease negotiations on behalf of the landlord.
