HAMPTON ROADS — goCommute, a Hampton Roads Transit program, is marking the 30th anniversary of the Transportation Demand Management program for Hampton Roads.
The program launched in 1995 as TRAFFIX before its rebranding last year to goCommute. For three decades, HRT said the program has helped reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality in the region by promoting alternatives to driving alone, including carpooling, vanpooling, public transit, teleworking, and active transportation like walking and biking.
“For 30 years, this program has been helping Hampton Roads commuters move smarter. What began as TRAFFIX has grown into goCommute, reflecting not just a new name, but a renewed commitment to give people real choices in how they move around the region,” said Amy Jordan, executive director. “This anniversary is about honoring the partnerships that brought us here and looking ahead to a future where sustainable, reliable, and connected transportation options are at the heart of how the region moves forward.”
According to HRT, the updated name and visual identity, introduced in November, reflect the program’s commitment to deliver smart, sustainable commuter solutions across Hampton Roads, emphasizing workforce accessibility and meaningful partnerships with employers, the military and commuters.
goCommute is operated by Hampton Roads Transit with funding provided through the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization.
To celebrate its anniversary, goCommute is giving away a four-pack of William & Mary football tickets when you sign up for the ConnectingVA app to log your trips. To enter for a four-pack of tickets to the William & Mary homecoming game on Oct. 18, riders must log at least five trips in the last 30 days in the ConnectingVA app. The last day to enter is Oct. 3.
goCommute serves the cities of Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, and Williamsburg; the counties of Isle of Wight, James City, and York; and a portion of Gloucester County, Franklin (city) and Southampton County.
In fiscal year 2024, the organization said the program saved 4 million traveled vehicle miles, reducing emissions by 1,727 tons. To learn more, visit goCommute.org.
