WILLIAMSBURG — The Muscarelle Museum of Art welcomed the community for its third annual Community Art Day, a free event designed to spark creativity and bring people together, Sept. 20.
Families, students and art lovers of all ages filled the museum grounds to enjoy hands-on art activities, live music performances and a showcase of student vendors from William & Mary. The highlight for many was the chalk art competition, which named three top winners, with first place taking home a $500 prize.
One of the most striking features of the day was the Communal Quilt, a collaborative project by community members now stretching more than 200 feet in length, symbolizing unity and shared creativity.
Guests also had the chance to explore the museum’s galleries through docent-led tours. Current exhibitions, including “Expanded Horizons” and “Highlights of the Permanent Collection” remain on view for those who missed the event.
The recent gathering at the Muscarelle Museum of Art was more than an art showcase, it was a celebration of community, creativity, and togetherness.
“The prizes were just icing on the cake,” said Steve Prince, Director of Engagement. “The most important thing is for us to come out and find ways to be creative together, especially in times when society feels so divided.”
The event invited participants not only to view art, but to engage with it. Conversations, debates, and reflections were encouraged, underscoring art’s role in both memory and community-building.
“Art has the ability to outlive us,” Prince continued. “Creatives help us see and see differently. That is the power here.”
Special thanks were given to Director David Brashear, along with museum staff, interns, and a group of dedicated volunteers who worked to bring the event together.
