JAMES CITY COUNTY— The James City County Police Department has named David J. White deputy chief of police, effective March 16.

White previously served as the department’s accreditation manager and brings more than 25 years of law enforcement and leadership experience to the role.

He began his career with the Fairfax County Police Department in 1999 and retired in 2024 as a captain. During his tenure, White served in assignments including patrol, major crimes, internal affairs, planning and research, resource management and as a duty officer. He also served as aide to deputy chiefs and as chief of staff to the chief of police.

White contributed to officer development as a field training instructor, peer support team member, crisis negotiator and instructor in the Fairfax County Police Supervisor School.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in public administration from George Mason University and a Master of Science in criminal justice from Northeastern University. His leadership training includes Leadership in Police Organizations, the Police Executive Leadership School and other professional development programs.

Police Chief Mark Jamison said he is confident in White’s ability to help lead the department.

“David brings exceptional experience and education to this position, and I am confident he will provide the strong perspective and innovative ideas that will continue moving the department forward,” Jamison said.

White was born in California to an Air Force family and lived in several locations across the country, including part of his childhood in the Philippines.

He and his wife, Lori, have been married for 17 years and have three children. The family moved to James City County in 2024 to be closer to extended family.

Outside of work, White enjoys woodworking, particularly live-edge projects. He is active in youth soccer, assisting with his son’s travel team, training his daughter and other players, and coaching another travel team. He and his wife also support their eldest daughter’s interests in dance and operatic singing.
