WILLIAMSBURG – Organizers for the Grove Christian Outreach Center are prepared for this year’s Prom Boutique, focusing on organization, community support, and creating meaningful experiences for students preparing for prom.

Trinity Muterspaugh, the coordinator of the event, said community response has been overwhelmingly positive these past couple of weeks, with donors bringing more than just attire.

“They get really excited, everybody. They come with their dresses. The main thing that I’ve been noticing is that they’ll give me a story with their attire that they’ll bring me,” Trinity said. “They’ll tell me where it was from, whether it was their kid’s prom or it was their son’s wedding. It’s always a story with it, and I’ve really enjoyed that so far.”

The boutique, which provides prom attire and accessories, aims to give students an opportunity they might not otherwise have.

“It means being able to experience that, “oh my gosh, this is the one moment,” Trinity said. “Even if it may not be perfect… being able to experience that, that they may not otherwise be able to, having that moment.”

The event will again be held at Legacy Hall, a location chosen for its familiarity and functionality.

“We knew the setup,” Trinity said. “It worked with what we had, storage wise and the flow of things.”

Organizers have focused on improving efficiency this year, particularly with how inventory is arranged.

“I think that we tried last year to put everything together by size when it was put away so that when we bring it out this year it’s already with its group,” Trinity said. “So that it makes it easier and we’ll try to do the same thing this year.”

Currently, about 40 new items have been donated, with more than 200 items already in storage, along with multiple totes of shoes in various sizes.

The boutique offers a full-service experience for attendees.

“They can expect, of course, to be greeted when they walk in. They can expect someone to be shopping with them,” Trinity said. “Just having someone holding their stuff… helping them with, “can you zip this up for me?” Those moments. Those silly moments.”

Students will also have access to accessories and preparation services.

“They can expect to have their things steamed, if they want. They can expect to have it bagged up. Shoes, accessories, makeup, things like that. The whole shazam,” she said.

In addition to dresses, organizers are still working to expand offerings for male students.

“We’re trying to get some haircut coupons so that young gentlemen can… get a discount on haircuts and things like that,” Trinity said. “Because I feel like they don’t get as much attention.”

Volunteers play a major role in the event’s success, with strong participation already lined up. The boutique is designed to be a low-pressure environment for students.

“It’s a very low pressure environment because it’s not a super crowded thing. It’s very low maintenance,” Trinity said. “This is the perfect thing for people that don’t like shopping.”

Ultimately, organizers hope the event helps ease stress during prom season.

“I hope that it makes them feel comfortable in that journey because you and I both know that that is all an uncomfortable area,” Trinity said. “Just something else that they don’t have to stress about.”

The GCOC Prom Boutique will take place April 14 – 16.
