HISTORIC TRIANGLE — Hampton Roads Transit isn’t just about buses, light rail and ferries, it also includes a new commuter van service.
GoCommute, formerly Traffix, is a program geared towards reducing traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions in our area. The program works by decreasing the number of single-occupancy vehicles commuting across Hampton Roads.
Through ridesharing, alternative transportation solutions, public transit, carpooling, vanpooling, biking and walking, the team at GoCommute is finding unique ways to help the environment.
“We provide solutions and guidance and connections to commuters in Hampton Roads to help them get to work, reduce traffic congestions, which in turn is best for the environment. The goal is to reduce congestion, but to also make sure that we are truly getting people to work,” said Amy Jordan, GoCommute director.
Vanpools are organized by location and destination. Through gocommute.org, users can enter their zip code and be matched with a rideshare partner. Once part of a vanpool, the organization incentivizes logging trips to earn rewards that can be used for discounts, coupons and raffle entries.
A big mission of the GoCommute team is active transportation.
“Cycling, scootering, and walking are great ways to stay fit and reduce your environmental footprint. Bike racks are available on all modes of transit, and stationary bike racks and bike repair stations are conveniently located near transit stops and bike routes. Our Bike Boost program provides these amenities throughout the region, making it easier to commute on two wheels or two feet,” Jordan said.
The program serves all of Hampton Roads and the seven cities.
According to GoCommute’s fiscal year 2024 numbers, commuters saved over 177,514 gallons of gas which equates to $2,520,795.
GoCommute also offers a guaranteed ride program.
“With the ConnectingVA Ride Home Rewards program, in partnership with the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, you get a reliable ride back to your point of origin for free if you have an unexpected emergency after you arrive at work, become ill, or if you need to work unscheduled overtime. If you are a full or part-time employee and use a carpool, vanpool, or ride transit to commute to work, the guaranteed ride will get you home when an unexpected event happens,” Jordan explained.
