W&M Athletics Excels in Classroom in 2024-25

WILLIAMSBURG — William & Mary Athletics once again excelled in the classroom during the 2024-25 academic year.

As a department, W&M student-athletes achieved a GPA of 3.45 during the spring semester. It marked the seventh consecutive semester over 3.25. More impressively, for the first time, all 21 programs produced a semester GPA above 3.1. Also for the first time, every Tribe program completed the year with a cumulative GPA above 3.0.

A total of 13 programs enjoyed a spring GPA of 3.5 or higher led by women’s basketball’s 3.67. On the men’s side, golf had the highest spring semester GPA at 3.65. Teams also achieving a 3.5 during the spring semester included women’s cross country, men’s and women’s gymnastics, lacrosse, women’s soccer, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s track and field, and volleyball.

W&M Athletics cumulative GPA at the end of the 2024-25 academic year was 3.38. Women’s gymnastics had the highest cumulative GPA at 3.67, while men’s golf enjoyed the top male cumulative GPA at 3.61.

The Tribe also enjoyed excellent year with 228 student-athletes receiving the W&M Provost Award. The Provost Award program began in 2003-04, and recognizes athletes who maintain over a 3.5 GPA. A total of 10 teams had at least 10 athletes honored, led by 33 from women’s cross country and track & field. On the men’s side, football led the way with 17 honorees. The complete list of Provost Award winners is below. Individually, 49 Tribe student-athletes earned 4.0 GPAs for the spring semester.

W&M also achieved elite marks in the NCAA annuals ratings – graduation rates and the APR. During the fall, the Tribe led all Division I public institutions in Federal Graduation Rate for the 19th time in the last 20 years. W&M’s 88% FGR was well ahead of the national average for all student-athletes (68%). It ranked ninth overall among all Division I schools and was the highest in the state of Virginia. W&M had 14 teams report a 100% GSR (men’s and women’s basketball, women’s cross country and track & field, field hockey, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s gymnastics, lacrosse, women’s soccer, women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball).

In the APR, the Tribe saw an increase in both perfect APR scores and NCAA Public Recognition Awards, ranking second among NCAA Division I public school in both categories. W&M programs garnered 14 Public Recognition Awards, a number that led the CAA and the state of Virginia while ranking sixth nationally. It marked W&M’s second most awards in the program’s 21-year history, up two from last year, and most since 2004-05. The list of Public Recognition Award winners for W&M includes: Men’s Basketball, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Men’s and Women’s Golf, Men’s and Women’s Gymnastics, Lacrosse, Women’s Soccer, Men’s and Women’s Swimming, Women’s Tennis, Men’s Track & Field, and Volleyball. In total, 17 Tribe programs achieved perfect APRs in 2023-24 and 13 produced perfect multi-year APRs.
