YORK COUNTY — York County’s seven neighborhood fire stations will hold a tribute to fallen firefighters at 10 a.m. on May 4 to coincide with the start of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation’s annual memorial ceremony in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
The county said that apparatuses at each station will be staged on the front ramp with red emergency lights engaged to recognize firefighters lost in the line of duty, their families and communities.
Citizens are encouraged to observe a moment of silence at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 4.
“This tribute is important to all of us who are involved in fire service — not only to our current and retired firefighters, but to their families, friends, and community members,” said Fire Chief Steve Kopczynski. “We hope our participation in this program encourages others to recognize those lost in the line of duty.”
Also on May 4, York County Fire Stations will fly their flags at half-staff as permitted by legislation signed into law by President George W. Bush in 2001.
Citizens can sign the Foundation’s Virtual Remembrance Banner by visiting the memorial website.
Each year, the foundation sponsors the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, the national tribute to all firefighters who died in the line of duty. The National Fallen Firefighters Memorial service will be shown live from Emmitsburg, Maryland, on the foundation’s website and social media channels.
Other ways to participate in the memorial are explained on the foundation’s website.
