NEWPORT NEWS — Christopher Newport University fifth-year senior Jahn Hines received yet another honor on Monday. The three-time All-American was selected the Player of the Week in the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference for the fourth straight time. It also marked the seventh time this season Hines has received the accolade.
The Captains, ranked 12th in the country, had another remarkable week with Hines leading the squad to home victories over Salisbury University and the University of Mary Washington. He averaged 18 points and 13.5 rebounds per contest, opening the week with a 14-point, nine-rebound effort versus the Sea Gulls in a 67-65 Christopher Newport victory. On senior night Saturday, his number 22 was retired prior to tip off, and he responded with a 22-point performance and added a career-high 18 rebounds against the Eagles in a 71-55 Captains triumph.
Hines has now scored 1,954 points in 118 games during his illustrious career, and is just 23 points behind Steve Artis for second place on CNU’s all-time scoring list. He became just the seventh CNU men’s basketball standout to have his number retired. The Norview High School product has now won the Player of the Week honor 20 times during his CNU career, more weeklies than any Christopher Newport student-athlete in any sport in history.
The Captains, who are now 20-4 and riding a six-game winning streak, will conclude the regular season on Saturday at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg. Tip off time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
