RICHMOND — The City of Richmond water outage has delayed the opening of the Virginia General Assembly 2025 legislative session that was slated to begin Wednesday.

The water crisis forced the closure of all state office buildings in Richmond, including the state Capitol and the General Assembly Building, as well as state offices in Hanover County Tuesday, according to the Virginia General Assembly website.

“While the City of Richmond continues to work tirelessly to restore water service, the Virginia Senate will gavel in the 2025 Legislative Session at noon tomorrow as required by the Constitution of Virginia.” said Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell. “Our standing committees will wait until our facilities are operational later this week to begin hearings when the public can participate. The lack of potable water and an operational fire suppression system are serious health hazards, but we will not fail to see to the people’s business. We thank all the public safety workers who have responded to the Winter Storm Blair in every corner of the Commonwealth.”

The General Assembly Building and Virginia Capitol are closed through Sunday, Jan. 12. Legislators aim to gavel in the new session on Monday, Jan. 13.
