WILLIAMSBURG — Williamsburg Fire Station No. 1 was recognized as a national award winner in Firehouse Magazine’s 11th annual Station Design Awards.
The 32,000-square-foot station, a collaborative design by GuernseyTingle and Stewart-Cooper-Newell Architects, received the silver award in the Volunteer/Combination Fire Station Award category, GuernseyTingle announced. Firehouse Magazine’s annual program highlights exceptional architecture and design in fire departments and emergency facilities across the United States.
The award-winning design for Williamsburg Fire Station No. 1 emphasizes functionality, innovation, and community impact, addressing the specific needs of volunteer and combination fire departments, according to GuernseyTingle. The facility offers modern amenities and optimized spaces to support efficient daily operations, enhance firefighter readiness, and foster connection within the Williamsburg community.
Among the features of the new station is a museum, which traces the Williamsburg Fire Department’s history from the first all-volunteer force created in 1753 to the hiring of the first paid fire marshal in 1950 to today’s station, the firm added. Elements of the past decorate the station’s walls, with photos from the department’s history hanging along the corridors.
“We are honored that Firehouse Magazine has recognized our collaborative work on the Williamsburg Fire Station No. 1,” said GuernseyTingle Principal and Project Manager Amanda Running. “These awards underscore our commitment to designing facilities that serve both the critical operational needs of first responders and the broader community.”
The Firehouse Magazine Station Design Awards recognize fire stations, EMS facilities, and other emergency response buildings that exemplify design excellence, innovation, and functionality. Williamsburg Fire Station No. 1 stood out among entries nationwide, showcasing GuernseyTingle’s expertise in creating spaces that enhance public safety and community engagement, it noted.
