HAMPTON ROADS — Drive Safe Hampton Roads is sponsoring its 757 Sober Ride campaign for the Columbus Day Weekend.
Drive Safe Hampton Roads (DSHR) notes October continues to be one of the most dangerous months on Virginia highways and Columbus Day weekend is the second deadliest holiday weekend of the year. During the 2023 weekend, there were 71 crashes with 4 fatalities and 44 people were injured.
DSHR asks motorists to remember basic driving skills — buckle up, follow a safe speed, stay focused and never drive impaired (and never let a friend drive if they show signs of impairment). Those planning to use are encouraged to arrange a sober ride home. Learn more about Drive Safe HR’s 757 Sober Ride powered by Lyft at drivesafehr.org/757soberride.
“Impaired Driving can take away your freedom or someone else’s freedom to celebrate the beautiful fall season with all the activities available to each of us, our family and friends. Enjoy these with responsibility by choosing 757 Sober Ride or allow a designated sober driver to take you home safely without any incidents.” said Jonathan Turner, 757 Sober Ride Chairperson.
There will be two separate sessions Columbus Day weekend:
- From 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, through 3 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 13 (session one)
- From 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13 through 3 a.m. Monday, Oct. 14 (session two)
During the campaign, area residents 21 years and older celebrating with alcohol and/or legal or illegal substances may download the Lyft app to their phones and enter the 757 Sober Ride code in the app’s “Payment” tab (under the “Add Lyft Pass” option) to receive their no-cost (up to $15) safe transportation home.
The code will only work if used during the above-stated timeframes for rides originating from or having a destination within Hampton Roads. DSHR’s Columbus Day Weekend 757 Sober Ride promo codes will be posted at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 for the first session and at 8 pm Sunday, Oct. 13 for the second session at drivesafehr.org/757soberride. The offer is valid while supplies last and is subject to Lyft’s Terms of Service.
The promo codes will be different for each session and cannot be used interchangeably, DSHR said.
DSHR, a nonprofit regional coalition whose mission is to improve highway safety and reduce injuries and deaths from vehicle crashes for over 36 years, partners with Lyft to promote the 757 Sober Ride campaign.
