JAMESTOWN — Jamestown Settlement will present “Storytelling Family Day” on Saturday, Aug. 3, giving families the opportunity to delve into interactive programs ranging from storytelling sessions to make-and-take crafts.

Storytelling

Storytelling sessions will be offered throughout the day, featuring Indigenous stories by Felicity Meza-Luna (Lakota) at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and African American stories by Sheila Arnold at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Interpretive Program

At 1 p.m. at the ships’ pier, visitors can discover the story of the European voyage to Virginia in 1607 by exploring five fruits — from apples to berries — that sailors and passengers would have encountered on the 144-day journey across the Atlantic Ocean.

Crafts

Ongoing craft activities will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A “My Day at Jamestown Settlement” storytelling craft is designed for preschoolers with picture magnets — a yehakin (Powhatan house), ship, deer, fishing net, armor, map and more — to color and take home to tell stories about their museum adventure.
A journal craft will build on the traditions of Indigenous, European and African cultures. Children will examine stories from cultures from around the globe to see how different people have shared their stories. They will then create their own adventure by writing a story on paper and binding those papers into a journal that they can share. Craft materials will be provided.
