JAMES CITY COUNTY — A 25-year-old from Newport News is dead after colliding with a VDOT Safety Service Patroller truck at an accident scene in James City County early Sunday morning.

Virginia State Police said at approximately 2:49 a.m. on March 24, it received several calls of a vehicle driving the wrong way on Interstate 64 — westbound in the eastbound lanes — around the 227 mile marker. When troopers arrived at that location, they found the vehicle had driven off the roadway and into the guardrail.

Fire and rescue blocked the right travel lane with the assistance of a VDOT Safety Service Patroller. Cones were set up and the vehicle’s arrow board was illuminated, directing traffic to the left lane.
Shortly after setting up the lane closure, a 2017 Toyota Corolla drove into the back of the VDOT truck, police said. The driver, 25-year-old Ayanna E. Coan, died on impact. Two passengers, a female and a male, both suffered serious life-threatening injuries. The female passenger was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center and the male passenger was flown to VCU Medical Center in Richmond.
The driver of the VDOT SSP truck was not injured in the crash.
Police said at this time it is unknown if alcohol was a contributing factor to the crash. Seatbelts were worn at the time of the crash. Police said the Commonwealth Attorney has been contacted and the incident remains under investigation.
