James City County Rotary Club hears speaker on autism
James City County Rotary Club heard Johnnie Underwood, Behavior Specialist, Williamsburg-James City County Schools, speak about the challenges of recognizing students affected with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) on Feb. 7.
The James City County Rotary Club notes how autism has impacted the community and recognizes the need to have a better understanding of ASD and do a better job educating our parents, community stakeholders, and educators. Underwood helped members recognize some of the characteristics of those on the spectrum. We have to do a better job educating our parents, community stakeholders, and educators.

New Kent wreath-laying ceremony
A wreath-laying ceremony honoring 24 African American New Kent County Revolutionary War patriots on Feb. 3 was attended by members of the Williamsburg Chapter, SAR. It was hosted by the African American Heritage Society of New Kent County at the historic New Kent County courthouse.
Help keep Virginia’s roads safe by applying for a grant from DMV
Organizations dedicated to keeping Virginia’s roads safe are invited to apply for grant funding from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles’ (DMV) Highway Safety Office. Applications may be submitted by local governments, state agencies, institutions of higher learning and nonprofits serving Virginia with transportation programs.
Grant funding is available in many areas of highway safety such as pedestrian safety, motorcycle safety, speed prevention, and drunk and distracted driving prevention.
Examples of program evaluation measures and more information on additional funding areas can be found on the DMV website. For more information on grant applications or required training workshops, reach out to the DMV program manager in your area. Grant applications are due Feb. 28.
Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg
At the Jan 31 Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg meeting, Andrew Trivette, the city manager of the City of Williamsburg, briefed the club on many of the facilities and road planning being made by the city. Trivette was recently selected as the 2021 recipient of the Prentis Award from William & Mary for his service to the community and support of the university.
YPSO conducts C.R.A.S.E. training for YCSD bus drivers
Recently, York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office Deputy Kevin Taylor modified and presented C.R.A.S.E. (Civilian Response to Active Shooter Event) training for York County School District bus drivers, teaching them and giving tips on situational awareness and how to react in the event of an active, aggressive situation.
Sheriff Ron Montgomery said, “Once again, this is an example of YPSO and YCSD working together to make our community an even safer place to live, work, and send our children to school.”
