(VSP)

HAMPTON — Virginia State Police are investigating a two-vehicle crash in Hampton that claimed the life of a VDOT Safety Service Patroller early Sunday morning.

Virginia State Police (VSP) said in the early morning hours of Oct. 8 at approximately 1:17 a.m., the State Police Communications Center received a call in reference to a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 eastbound at the Big Bethel overpass, mile marker 261, in the city of Hampton. According to police, the caller advised that the crash involved a VDOT Safety Service Patrol (SSP) truck and another vehicle.

According to VSP, its preliminary investigation revealed that the SSP truck, a 2020 Ford F250, pulled over onto the right shoulder to assist with a disabled vehicle. Police said the service vehicle was correctly positioned on the right shoulder with its arrow board illuminated. The safety service patroller, 52-year-old Craig Boone, was outside the truck assisting with the disabled vehicle.

Shortly after, a 2020 Jeep Latitude driven by 27-year-old Alana F. Diomande of the 4000 block of Justice Lane, Yorktown, was traveling eastbound when she ran off the road, crossed over the fog line and into the right shoulder, sideswiping the SSP truck and striking Boone, according to police.

Boone died on impact.

VSP said Diomande was found to be under the influence and was taken from the scene for blood withdrawal due to intoxication and failure to comply at the scene. Diomande was taken to Hampton City Jail where she was charged with driving under the influence, involuntary manslaughter, obstruction, curse and abuse.

Police said the Hampton Commonwealth Attorney’s Office was also notified and will be assisting with charges and the case.

Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team was called to the scene to provide a detailed investigation of the crash.
