York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office Touts K-9 Unit Success

The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office is touting the success of its K-9 unit. On Feb. 9, K-9 Deputy Ghost and his partner responded to a suspicious person with a firearm complaint. K-9 Ghost located a .40 caliber pistol and two loaded magazines in the woods, the office said. This led to a search warrant of the suspect’s residence, where Sheriff’s Office Investigators recovered nine additional illegally possessed firearms. The suspect was arrested on charges of illegally possessing firearms by a convicted felon the suspect’s second arrest for illegally possessing firearms.

Also on Feb. 9, K-9 Saber and partner assisted a neighboring jurisdiction in an illegal drug investigation, alerting on a suspect’s vehicle where illegal narcotics were found. This led to investigators obtaining a search warrant for a residence where two pounds of suspected crystal methamphetamine were seized along with a large quantity of cash. Charges are pending. And K-9 Deputy Bado and partner tracked a suspect that ran from a traffic stop in the Tabb area of York County. Bado found the suspect’s jacket along with several packets of suspected illegal narcotics. Upon searching the vehicle, they located scales, cocaine, various pills, and over $3,000 in cash. The suspect is currently incarcerated at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail and charged with Obstruction of Justice, Possession of Schedule I or II narcotics with the Intent to Distribute, Possession of a Scheduled IV Narcotic, Attempted Burglary of a Residence, DWI Drugs 1st Offense, and Driving with a Revoked Operator’s License.

GuernseyTingle Names Newest Stockholder and Vice President

GuernseyTingle, one of the largest architectural firms on the Virginia Peninsula, announced that Dawn Hassan has been named Vice President and Stockholder of the Williamsburg-based architectural, interior design and planning firm.

Hassan is the fourth female to be appointed Vice President at the firm, which will be celebrating its 40th year in business in November.

Prior to joining GuernseyTingle 11 years ago, Hassan spent 25 years working for international corporations and local construction and architectural businesses. Hassan earned a Master of Education degree from William & Mary and a Bachelor of Science degree from Old Dominion University. She is a member of the Society of Design Administrators.

Ruth Larson to Run for Reelection to James City County Board of Supervisors

Ruth Larson, current Berkeley District representative on the James City County Board of Supervisors, announced today her candidacy for reelection this November.

Larson won her seat on the board in 2015, elected to serve a four-year term. She won a second four-year term in 2019, running unopposed. She iwill run as an Independent, as she has before.

Larson previously served a decade on the Williamsburg-James City County School Board, including three terms as chair. She is a graduate of the Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership and the Virginia Association of Counties Virginia Certified County Supervisors Program. She serves statewide as the 1st Vice President on the Virginia Association of Counties Executive Board.

More than 50 area employers will be represented at Tidewater Community College’s Career Fair on Feb. 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the student center on TCC’s Chesapeake Campus, located at 1428 Cedar Road. A complete roster of participating companies is available on the College Central Network. The event will also feature TCC information tables with staff to provide prospective students with information about academic programs, financial aid, admissions and student services. Transportation will be provided for students to and from the Career Fair. Drive Safe Hampton Roads holds Old, Used, Borrowed and Abused Child Safety Seat Round-Up February 2023

For the 34th year, Drive Safe Hampton Roads (DSHR) has joined forces with community partners to collect old, used and potentially unsafe child safety seats during the Child Safety Seat Round-Up program. This program also serves to educate parents and caregivers about the possible dangers of using car seats past the date recommended by the manufacturer, have been purchased secondhand, missing parts or have no traceable recall information.
DSHR has partnered with Walmart, AAA Tidewater Virginia, Hoffman Beverage Co., Waste Management of Virginia, and the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters for the round-up. Walmart is providing a $5 Walmart gift card for each seat turned in (limit two rewards per person). Safety seats can be dropped off at Walmart Supercenter select locations or at any of the eleven AAA Tidewater Virginia locations from Feb. 1–28.

Chesapeake Financial Shares Reports Record Earnings and Declares Dividend

Jeffrey M. Szyperski, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Chesapeake Financial Shares, Inc. (parent company of both Chesapeake Bank and Chesapeake Wealth Management), reported record earnings for calendar year 2022 of $17,628,587.

At its Jan. 20 Chesapeake Financial Shares Board of Directors meeting, the Board declared a quarterly dividend of $0.15 per share effective March 1, payable on or before March 15.  The company has increased its dividend for 30 consecutive years.  The stock currently has a 2.78% dividend yield.
