WILLIAMSBURG-JAMES CITY COUNTY — The Williamsburg-James City County (WJCC) Public School Board approved bonuses for more than 1,800 staff members at its regular June 21 meeting.
The bonuses were granted in recognition and appreciation of the staff’s efforts to achieve a strong and successful year of in-person learning during the 2021-22 school year.
“We are grateful to WJCC Schools employees for everything they have done for our students and the community in this challenging year,” said WJCC Superintendent Olwen E. Herron. “Our team is resilient, dedicated, and the reason WJCC Schools is an incredible place to work and learn.”
The eligible staff who are receiving bonuses are those who were employed by WJCC Schools on or before Feb. 1 and fulfilled their employment contract for the 2021-22 school year.
According to a WJCC news release, approximately $1,955,000 was awarded.
During the same school board meeting, Paul Rice was appointed principal of Lafayette High School, effective July 1. The new Lafayette principal brings 20 years of secondary school experience to the job. Rice most recently served as Tabb High School principal in York County.
The school board also recognized the Lafayette High School girls varsity soccer team for winning the 2022 VHSL Girls Soccer State Championship (Virginia) – Class 3 tournament. The soccer team clinched the state title with a 5-0 win over Roanoke’s Hidden Valley team on June 11.
