STATEWIDE — The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is making $34 million in grants available to public colleges and universities so that the schools can develop resources and professional development programs for reading and math teachers.
The grant program, Onward and Upward: Supporting Literacy and Mathematics, is in keeping with recommendations from a workgroup of teachers, parents and educational partners.
“This grant opportunity represents a challenge and opportunity for our partners in higher education to develop resources and programs specifically for these extraordinary times and help our K-12 students and schools recover from the pandemic,” Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. James Lane said. “The need is urgent and the criteria for awarding grants reflects VDOE’s commitment to promoting and supporting what works in helping students grow academically and achieve grade-level proficiency.”
The funding or the grant comes as part of the American Rescue Plan Act, which allocated $2.1 billion in pandemic relief money for Virginia public schools.
All public two and four-year colleges are eligible to apply. Private colleges may also participate in partnership with public institutions.
School that are awarded grant money will be required to give semiannual progress reports to the VDOE.
