JAMES CITY COUNTY — The James City County (JCC) Board of Supervisors (BOS) approved a resolution for a one-time credit as part of its FY 2025 Budget.

Jennifer Tomes, County Treasurer stated, “During the budget discussions of 2025, this body acknowledged the higher real estate tax amount county property owners will be faced with this year based on the most recent reassessment results. To alleviate some of the burden, without changing the current tax rate of 83 cents, the board elected to have a tax credit equal to 5 cents applied to the FY 2025 real estate tax invoices.”

The JCC tax collection software is not equipped for that proposed 0.5 credit, explained Tomes.

To meet the October mailing deadline for the first installment, the decision was made to use the smallest number of parameters the software vendor needs to provide the credit Tomes added.

“On the real estate invoices for FY 2025, due in December and next June, the citizens will see the original tax amount assessed, the amount of the credit, and an acknowledgment of the FY 2025 budget adopted by the (JCC BOS) that includes that credit,” said Tomes.

A credit of 5 cents per $100 of value will be applied to all real estate tax assessed in FY
2025 as invoices are generated. This credit will be divided evenly between the first and second installments for FY 2025.

Invoices for FY 2025 real estate taxes will include the specific credit amount for the parcel in question with a short explanation.

“What seems to be relatively easy from my standpoint, they (the Treasurer’s office) have put a lot of hours and effort into this and I want to publicly thank them for getting us to the point where the board asked them to be,” said Scott Stevens, JCC County Administrator.

The resolution was approved by the board.
