Child Development Resources Break Ground for New Location

WILLIAMSBURG — Local nonprofit Child Development Resources (CDR) held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new headquarters on Wednesday, Sept. 25.

The ceremony was attended by CDR staff, board members, donors, community members and government officials.

The new center, located on Waller Mill Road, is centrally located in the Historic Triangle and accessible by public transportation.

“Thirty years ago, we broke ground on our main office and we thought it would be our forever home. But, CDR has grown tremendously in the last 30 years and we now offer ten programs across four locations and serve 3,100 children in our community and reach over 10,000 children across the state every year,” said Paul Scott, CDR Executive Director.

The public charity, started in 1965, serves as a focal point of support and solutions for young children and families struggling with disabilities and developmental delays.

The current location is undergoing renovations to meet CDR’s needs.

The building renovation is estimated to cost around $12 million, “and we are thrilled to announce we have raised more than $8.8 million, enabling us to confidently move forward with the renovation of the facility as well as the construction of our new wing for our Center for Professional Development,” added Scott.

Honorary CDR Campaign Chair and former CDR Board Chair Kathy Hornsby said, “This is a special day. Like so many of you joining us today, my husband Bruce and I, have been long time supporters of CDR. And, like you, we are so proud of everything that CDR has accomplished.”

Speaking of her time serving on the CDR board, Hornsby added, “It was during that time that I truly began to appreciate CDR’s mission for their children and families. And, I saw first hand, the staffs deep dedication, professionalism and love for all who walked through the door.”

The new facility will house all CDR programs in one space.

“Combining five buildings into one allows for and supports the opportunity to serve more children, and more efficient delivery of services,” stated Carla Javiar, Director of Children’s Services.

CDR, which is serves Williamsburg, James City County, York County, and Poquoson, has raised funds for the new building through its Building Stronger Futures Together capital campaign.

CDR’s 5th Annual Oyster Roast fundraiser — a ticketed event — will take place on Sunday, Oct. 27 from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m on the lawn of the Colonial Williamsburg Art Museums.
