HISTORIC TRIANGLE — “Ten Questions with” is a series that allows readers to get to know local business leaders, volunteers and community members in the Historic Triangle.
This week, meet David Walker.
What is your job title and description?
I am honored to serve as President and CEO of the Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes (Coalition), a leading national Veteran Service Organization. We provide direct emergency financial aid to post-9/11 combat-wounded veterans and their families who sacrificed in the War on Global Terror.
Who do you interact/work with regularly?
My primary interactions are with our dedicated staff, esteemed board of directors, and various stakeholders including donors. Building awareness of the Coalition’s mission among the media, business leaders, and policymakers is also crucial. However, the most fulfilling aspect of my role is regular contact with combat-wounded veterans.
How does your organization interact with the local community?
We engage with the local community through events, media outreach, local scholarships, and volunteer opportunities. For instance, we have supported food distributions at the Norfolk Naval base and organized local marriage retreats in Williamsburg over the past six years. Housing is also a top priority.
What is something about your job most people wouldn’t know about?
I initially joined the Coalition as a volunteer when it was founded in 2004. It has truly been a labor of love.
How do you define success?
Success for us is embodied in three key principles. First, our mantra: “Our work is love made visible.” Second, building a foundation of trust within ourselves and our team. And third, as I often say, “God will connect the dots.” Through faith and trust, we have provided over $60 million in aid to more than 40,000 veterans and their families since our inception, earning numerous accolades and awards.
What is your most successful accomplishment to date?
One of our most notable achievements is being recognized as one of the top 5 Best Nonprofits to Work For. With faith, love, and trust, anything is possible.
How long have you lived/worked in the Historic Triangle?
My wife and I have formally lived here for one year. However, we have been actively involved in Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown Foundations for the better part of 25 years. In recent years, the Coalition has also hosted marriage retreats, leadership workshops, and board meetings in Williamsburg.
What is your favorite part of being in the Historic Triangle?
I cherish the rich history, the gentle pace of life, and the favorable climate.
What do you do for downtime/to relax?
In my downtime, I enjoy golfing, exploring historic venues, reading, and spending time with my two lovely daughters (when they visit!) and our dog Dewey.
What is the next step in your journey?
My primary goal is to establish a legacy of running a well-run organization that will endure and continue to serve for many years to come. I remain open to discerning God’s will for any future steps.
