WILLIAMSBURG—  On Feb. 25, 2026, the League of American Bicyclists recognized the Bicycle Co-Op of Williamsburg with a Platinum Bicycle Friendly Business award, placing it among more than 1,100 businesses nationwide working to build a more bicycle-friendly America. The co-op achieved the rare distinction of earning Platinum status on its first application.

“Across the country, businesses are getting creative in how they support people who bike,” said Bill Nesper, executive director of the League of American Bicyclists. “From community gardens to medical centers to ice cream shops, Bicycle Friendly Businesses are showing that when you build biking into how you operate and how you show up locally, it pays off in healthier teams, happier customers and stronger communities.”

The Bicycle Co-Op of Williamsburg joins 1,117 current Bicycle Friendly Businesses nationwide, including government agencies, Fortune 500 companies, museums, hospitality establishments, bike shops and other employers committed to creating workplaces that are more welcoming to customers and employees who bike. The award recognizes an organization’s efforts to advance the movement to build a bicycle-friendly America.

“At the heart of this work is consistency,” Nesper said. “Bicycle Friendly Businesses don’t treat biking as a one-time project. They build it into their policies, their benefits and their culture. The Bicycle Co-Op of Williamsburg has shown what it looks like to stick with that commitment and make it part of how they operate every day.”

The co-op promotes bicycling as a transportation option and offers amenities including do-it-yourself repair days with access to volunteer mechanics, tools and parts, as well as community workshops and social rides. Through the sale of refurbished bikes donated by community members, the organization supports its mission of providing bicycles to people who lack reliable transportation. The effort is carried out in partnership with local nonprofits, human services agencies and educational institutions.

“Being bike-friendly has built bridges for our entire community — including the most vulnerable among us,” said Allison Jarvis, manager of the Bicycle Co-Op of Williamsburg. “The community donates bikes to us, our volunteers refurbish them and we sell them at more affordable prices to support our mission of addressing transportation equity. It’s a model where everyone plays a part in lifting up and supporting each other — all thanks to bikes.”

As part of the Bicycle Friendly Business network, the co-op will have access to tools and technical assistance from the league to further enhance its efforts. League officials say workplaces that support biking can help expand opportunity, strengthen community connections and improve physical and mental well-being.
