Abingdon Concert Series to Host Nobuntu

Abingdon Episcopal Church in White Marsh, Gloucester County, will be hosting Nobuntu, a female a cappella quartet from Zimbabwe, in the second concert this season in the Arts at Abingdon Concert Series.
The concert will be held Thursday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. at the church. Admission is free, but a free-will offering will be accepted. No reservations required.
Nobuntu, a female a cappella quartet from Zimbabwe, has drawn international acclaim for its performances that range from traditional Zimbabwean songs to Afro Jazz to Gospel. The ensemble’s concerts feature their pure voices along with traditional dance and percussion. The name “Nobuntu” is an African concept that values Humbleness, Love, Purpose, Unity and Family from a Woman perspective.
Currently, the group is comprised of Claire Dangarembwa, Heather Dube, Joyline Sibanda, Briget Siphiwe Dube and Duduzile Sibanda. They are currently on a 24-city tour in the United States.

Gov. Youngkin Signs Teen Driver Safety Bill

Gov. Glenn Youngkin recently held an bill signing for a new teen driver safety bill that makes it a Class 1 misdemeanor for parents, guardians, or anyone who knowingly allows an unlicensed person to operate a motor vehicle if that act results in injury or death.
Youngkin was joined by Sen. Danny Diggs, Del. Chad Green and his children, and advocate Tammy “Gweedo” McGee, whose son, Conner Guido was the inspiration for the new law. McGee is the founder of the Gweedo Memorial Foundation.
Naval Station Norfolk Hiring Event
DAV (Disabled American Veterans) and RecruitMilitary will co-host the Naval Station Norfolk Hiring Event, Oct. 30 from 11 a.m.–3 p.m. at the Vista Point Center.
More than 59 employers actively seeking veterans will be on-site representing a range of industries from construction to medical to administrative and logistics, with career opportunities from entry level to senior management. In addition to employment assistance, veterans can utilize career counseling and resume assistance, network with fellow veterans and military personnel, and get support with their Department of Veterans Affairs benefits and claims assistance — all at no cost.

Poquoson Police Department to Host Drug Take Back Event
The Poquoson Police Department will host a Drug Take-Back event from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 at Poquoson Gifts as part of the 28th National Drug Take-Back Initiative. Residents can safely dispose of unused or expired medications at the event.

York County to Host Drug Take Back Day, Shredding Event
Sheriff Ron Montgomery and the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office will hold a Drug Take Back event to provide citizens the opportunity to drop off expired or unneeded prescription pills, patches, and liquid medications to help prevent drug abuse or theft, and to ensure drugs are disposed of properly, Saturday Oct. 25, from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m..
Pills, patches, vaping pens (without internal batteries), and liquid medications may be dropped off from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office. The Drug Take Back cannot accept needles or other sharp items. This service is provided at no cost and is anonymous, no questions asked, according to the county.
As an additional service to the community, the York County Beautification Committee and the Department of Public Works are providing the opportunity to shred personal papers, up to five boxes of paperwork per person. Staples and/or paperclips do not need to be removed prior to shredding. The service is available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Also at this event, the Beautification Committee will accept plastic bags for recycling in the Trex Bench challenge. Drop off your plastic bags and they will be shipped to the Trex Company. Once 1,000 pounds of plastic materials are collected, the committee will receive a free bench for one of its school sites.
In addition, this is a donation spot for a local food pantry accepting non-perishable canned/boxed food items to serve the needs of the hungry in the area.
Signs will be posted notifying drivers of the entrance to the event.

James City County to Mark National Drug Take Back Day
The James City County Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Agency are inviting the public to join them for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Law Enforcement Center.
The free, anonymous event helps prevent drug misuse by safely disposing of old, unwanted or expired medications. Accepted items include tablets, capsules, patches and other solid prescription drugs.
Syringes, sharps, illicit drugs and leaking or unsealed liquids will not be accepted. Liquid medications must remain sealed in their original containers.
According to the county, since its launch 16 years ago, Take Back Day has removed over 19.8 million pounds of medication from circulation in partnership with local law enforcement. Learn more at DEATakeBack.com.
Williamsburg Landing Appoints Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer
Williamsburg Landing announced it has appointed John Becker as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.
According to Williamsburg Landing, Becker’s career spans more than 20 years of leadership in skilled nursing facilities and retirement communities. He has directed large-scale, multi-facility operations, providing strategic oversight of clinical quality, regulatory compliance, staffing, and financial performance. Known for guiding organizations through complex surveys and audits, Becker has advanced initiatives that elevate resident care, strengthen team performance, and ensure long-term organizational success, it added.
Becker is a North Carolina Licensed Nursing Home Administrator and Licensed Nurse, with a
Bachelor’s degree in Health and Human Services. He also holds certifications in dietary services and the resident assessment process.
JCC to Hold Final Virtual Skatepark Community Design Meeting
James City County is inviting the public to take part in the final virtual Skatepark Community Design Meeting Thursday, Oct. 30, 6 p.m., where the final design draft will be introduced.
During the Skatepark Design Workshop held on Oct. 9, members of the skatepark community, along with the Spohn Ranch design team and representatives from James City County Parks & Recreation, came together to discuss three proposed skatepark designs.
The result of this community engagement favored Draft no. 1 with the incorporation of elements from Draft no. 3. Drafts from the meeting can be found on the Warhill Skatepark webpage.

JCC BOS Vice Chair to Host Grove Community Meeting
James City County citizens are invited to attend a community meeting in Grove hosted by Board of Supervisors Vice Chair and Roberts District representative John McGlennon on Oct. 30 from 6-8 p.m. at Little Zion Baptist Church.
The county said discussion topics will include the Grove Park, the Grove Convenience Center, the trash and recycling pilot program, the Route 60 project, drainage projects (Magruder Avenue and in the area of Jackson Street, Howard Drive and Railroad Street), and a check-in with Police on any issues or concerns, followed by Q&A.
James City County Skatepark to Permanently Close Oct. 26
James City County announced the James City County Skatepark will permanently close at its current location at sunset on Sunday, Oct. 26. The closure will help the county to prepare for site work for the consolidated James City County Government Center.
The county is in the process of creating and relocating the skatepark to the Warhill Sports Complex. Residents can stay updated on the Warhill Skatepark project by visiting the county’s website.
During the transition, the county suggested using one of the following skateparks:
