WILLIAMSBURG — Monkee’s of Williamsburg, a women’s clothing store located in Merchants Square, celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Feb. 29.

According to the Monkee’s of Williamsburg website, the store offers an extensive selection of designer boutique-style shoes, clothing, and accessories that are hand-picked seasonally to reflect current trends while also maintaining a classic Southern style.

The shop is owned by Williamsburg local Christina Wallace, who moved to Williamsburg with her husband, Nick, in 2017. Originally from Poquoson, Wallace has worked on and off in the area since her twenties.

The ribbon cutting was attended by members of the Greater Williamsburg Chamber of Commerce, Williamsburg Mayor Doug Pons, former Williamsburg Mayor Paul Freiling and Vice Mayor W. Pat Dent.

“This is just a wonderful addition to Merchant’s Square,” said Dana Tomlin, Chief of Staff at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, who was also in attendance. “It just adds to the charm and the vibrancy of the community and so we’re thrilled to have [the shop] here and wish [Christina] much success.”

Monkee’s opened its first store in Wilmington, North Carolina in 1995, and has grown substantially, with locations in a dozen states, including locally in Virginia Beach and Richmond. Each store is independently owned and operated. Wallace said she chose the brand due to its positive message and loved that the franchise allowed her to be part of the team but be “allowed to spread her creative wings.”

“I’m really excited that the business is opening and this day we’ve been looking forward to is here,” said Wallace when addressing the crowd for the ribbon cutting. “So thank you all for all of your support it means a lot to us.”

Monkee’s of Williamsburg is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. For more information about the store, visit its official website.
