TOANO — The Green Thrift Store in Toano has a mission to support local charities while keeping reusable items out of landfills.
According to its mission statement, the store, a division of The Junkluggers of Williamsburg, aims to keep items out of landfills by donating, recycling, and rehoming things people no longer need or want.
“The Green Thirft store was created about a month ago to further the mission of Junkluggers of keeping reusable items out of landfills and a different way for us to donate,” said Zach Kirkpatrick, general manager for the Junkluggers of Williamsburg.
“We’ve worked with Habitat for Humanity, CHKD, Goodwill, and places like that the first 3 1/2 years in business, donating items to them. Through the store, we’re able to do that a different way by donating funds to charities we don’t get to typically support with items,” Kirkpatrick added.
A portion of the proceeds that are made from sales of rehomed items are donated to a local charity that changes quarterly. This quarter, proceeds are going to the Hospice House of Williamsburg. Next quarter the plan is to donate to Child Development Resources.
Junkluggers will sort what items go to the store and which get given to other places, such as Habitat for Humanity, based on size and what needs to be restocked. On a weekly basis, the store will donate about half a truck’s worth of items.
The store is operating out of Junklugger’s warehouse in Toano. Hours are limited and vary. While the store does not have its own social media page, customers can keep up with hours and what’s in stock by joining the Green Thrift Store Facebook group.
