WILLIAMSBURG — Colonial Williamsburg will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of three new stores in Merchants Square on Dec. 17 at 10 a.m.

The three new stores: J. McLaughlin, Penny and a Sixpence, and FatFace, have leased spaces in the former Williams Sonoma building.

“We are excited to be celebrating the opening of three new retail stores in Merchants Square, further positioning the area as a premier shopping location for both Williamsburg locals and students, as well as visitors to the area,” said Keith Johnson, Director of Commercial and Residential Property at Colonial Williamsburg. “With an abundance of specialty and locally owned boutiques, Merchants Square continues to grow as a must-stop destination for those in the Williamsburg area.”

J. McLaughlin is a fashion retail store founded in 1977 by two brothers. The fashion retailer offers a variety of styles and fits with a focus on American sportswear.

FatFace is a UK-based apparel retailer founded in 1988. The company sells Men and Women’s casual clothes. The store in Merchants Square will be the company’s second Virginia location. The first Virginia location is located in Alexandria, Virginia.

Penny and a Sixpence is a jewelry store that specializes in sterling silver jewelry. However, they do feature gold-plated jewelry as well.

“Penny and a Sixth Pence is a cute jewelry store. It is silver jewelry, and it is reasonably priced. It’s a great place to get a Christmas gift and it is a brand new store,” said President of Merchants Square Association, Ralph Young in an interview with WYDaily. “And then there are two new stores very close to that. One is called FatFace, and that is an English store. I was just talking to their manager and they maybe have 25 stores in the United States and a couple hundred in England. They have men’s and women’s casual clothes. Then there’s another new clothing store right next to it called J. McLaughlin. They’re all in the old Williamsburg Sonoma Building. That’s a building right when you start walking into merchant square. They’re all really unique stores and I think it’s something that everybody will like.”
