VIRGINIA BEACH — For two local brothers, a typical workday consists of helping people save money while at the same time doing their part to help address the increasingly important issue of climate change.

Will Gregory and Matt Kanz are employed by Solar Services, a local company that has been designing, installing, and servicing solar energy systems since 1986.

The brothers, you could say, are helping the environment one customer at a time.

“The satisfaction I feel once a customer is not only saving money, but (also) saving the environment, is truly indescribable,” said Kanz, who serves as an executive assistant. “I do enjoy working with people who are interested in converting to solar because I feel like I can share the information with them that I have attained over the many years of working here. Not simply to make a sale, but to help educate them on the topic so they can learn and share that knowledge with someone else.”

For Gregory, who has a degree in culinary arts, working as a solar system design specialist has its own rewards.

“It is definitely exciting to see your hard work paying off,” he said. “When you size a net-zero system and you get the phone call from a customer saying their last power bill was $2 and they’re raving about their system, it’s a pretty cool feeling.”

He said solar energy is important in a few ways, since it’s a reliable source for alternative energy, helpful in reducing pollution, and also a great way to save money.

“I enjoy the personal interaction, as well as passing on knowledge to better help customers understand what solar can do for them,” he added.

Both of the brothers say they try to help customers see solar energy as an investment: First by saving them money month after month and year after year, and second through its positive impact on the environment and for generations to come.

“What originally attracted me to solar renewable energy was my understanding that it helps society eliminate the constant need for fossil fuels, thus helping keep our environment clean, and saving people money in the process,” Kanz said.

Solar electric is more affordable than ever, Gregory said.

“We pride ourselves on customer service so we work on streamlining the overall process so the homeowner doesn’t really have to do anything,” he said. “We take care of everything from permitting to engineering to final inspections. I think it just has to make sense to the homeowner.”

Both of the brothers are also proud to point out Solar Services’ electricity bill, which typically amounts to about $17 a month for the entire business – along with zero consumption of energy.

It’s important, they said, for the business to practice what it preaches.

“From assisting my colleagues if they need a hand in the office, to operating the forklift when getting an order in, and from going out to provide a sales estimate to a potential client, I am glad I have the team behind me that I do,” Kanz said. “I enjoy knowing I am able to help others.”
