A new business wants to help you decorate your home – only prettier than before.
Toano resident Laura Lane opened Only Prettier on Jan. 15.
Lane sells hand-crafted wreaths she’s made herself. As a full-time writer, she said she never envisioned herself making arts and crafts commercially, but discovered she had a passion for it after moving into her new home more than a year ago.
Her walls were blank slates, so she began shopping for decorations.
“I’d have ideas for things in particular, but I couldn’t find what I wanted, so I’d make it myself,” Lane said.
She did some research, and began visiting craft stores and making her very own decorations for her home. What’s more, Lane found that she was enjoying herself.
However, it wasn’t until this past holiday season that Lane began making wreaths for others.
“I was looking for a wreath for my sister-in-law,” Lane said. “I was looking for something that they could use all year but I couldn’t find anything I could afford.”
Instead, Lane made her sister-in-law a burlap wreath. When her sister-in-law loved it, Lane realized her hobby could become a source of income.
“I can only use only so many wreaths for myself, so I decided to sell them,” Lane said.
Lane has sold 20 of her wreaths since opening in January, and she has customers from locations between New Kent and Hampton. She’s also opened her own booth at Sweet Caroline’s Marketplace, where her creations are on display and for sale.
She customizes her wreaths to her customers’ requests, such as adding bows or a specific college’s colors. Lane has also begun adding new items to her inventory, such as Easter baskets.
Lane said her strengths as a writer have also helped her market her business, and she hopes to expand with the support of her customers.
Wreaths can be purchased at Only Prettier’s Facebook page.
