The Williamsburg Planning Commission has recommended the application for a downtown brewery to City Council.
Amber Ox Kitchen and Brewery has proposed to operate a brewery and restaurant in the Prince George Commons in downtown Williamsburg.
Co-owner Andrew Voss appeared before the city’s Planning Commission Wednesday in a public hearing to make his case for his application. The commission voted unanimously, 4-0, to approve the proposal.
“I think it’s a perfect addition for the downtown area,” said commissioner Andrew Edwards. “It’s a great asset and exactly what we’re looking for.”
The proposed business will occupy a 5,360 square foot building, with 712 square feet dedicated to the brewery, according to meeting documents. An outdoor seating area is also proposed.
“The intention is to deliver guests that craft beer experience as well as great local products produced within the region,” said Andrew Voss, co-owner of Amber Ox.
Voss said Amber Ox plans to brew approximately 700 barrels of beer annually. The brewery will offer four to six varieties of beer at a time, in addition to beers from other regional breweries.
Promotional material included with the application indicate the brewery’s menu will feature a wide array of seasonal dishes and regionally-sourced ingredients.
“The Amber Ox is a welcoming culinary-focused brewery, always looking for innovative ways to create dishes that pair perfectly with our beer,” stated the application document. “By tapping into the rich culinary and brewing history of Virginia, we believe we have created something unique to Williamsburg.”
Amber Ox submitted two requests: One to change the text of the city code to allow micro-breweries in the Downtown Business District, and another for a special use permit to operate the restaurant and brewery.
Before voting in favor of the project, Planning Commission Second Vice-Chair Elaine McBeth said, “Folks in town are going to be really excited about the project.”
