Harold Smith has taken over the role of president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula.

Smith assumed his new role on April 15, after being unanimously voted into the position by the organization’s corporate board of directors in March.

Smith’s appointment follows the departure of Steven Kast, who led the clubs for the past 32 years.

Before being named president and CEO, Smith served for nearly two years as the organization’s chief operating officer. In that capacity he implemented the “EatSMART” program, through which the U.S. Department of Agriculture provides more than 1,000 free meals and snacks to club members every day.

“Hal’s previous position as chief operating officer of our organization presents the best possible outcome for a seamless transition in this top position,” said Linda Rohrer, chairwoman of the corporate board of directors. “His exceptional leadership and positive relationships with staff at all 13 clubs and two thrift stores ensure the legacy of outstanding service to the youth of our community.”

Smith has been connected with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula for more than a decade, serving as a board member for seven years before taking on the role of COO.

“As president and CEO, I will continue to methodically expand our influence in areas of the peninsula that are still in need of our services and impact,” Smith said. “We will continue this impact so that tomorrow’s leaders will be today’s Boys & Girls Club kids. Not only will they be leaders, but they’ll give back in their communities to pay it forward.”
