Where We Live: Georgian with no stone left unturned in Kingsmill

At first glance, you may think the Georgian at 24 Whittaker’s Mill in Kingsmill was the work of an HGTV design star. But the spacious, 4-bedroom, 3-and-a-half bath home was a labor of love for long-time Williamsburg resident Kevin Jones and his family.

“We really liked Kingsmill and when we first saw the house, we liked that the home had Southern bones,” Kevin said. “We walked in and immediately knew we wanted it. It was in great condition, just very tired.”

Since it was one of the biggest lots around, and with the opportunity to do a renovation, they were sold.

The family had a clear picture of what they wanted the house to look like design-wise.

“My wife has been the one who has always done that kind of stuff in our previous homes, and she did the same in this house,” Kevin said.

They finished off three large unfinished spaces in the house, which gave every room extra living space.

“For a family of five, everybody had more than enough space,” Kevin said.

They raised all the doorways in the downstairs, so the home felt more open and airy. They created a large closet in the first floor master, gutted the kitchen, upgraded the HVAC, installed all new lighting and had heart pine floors shipped in from Florida, among many other improvements.

The outdoors got the royal treatment as well. A patio out back has a custom-made cast iron firepit built in under a removable granite coffee table top. In the summers when the fire pit isn’t needed, the table top serves a good spot for drinks or games.

The patio has cable and power, so the family sometimes sets up a television to watch games outdoors. Kevin also put in a large air conditioned storage space under the sunroom for outdoor equipment and off-season gear.

“There wasn’t a thing we needed to do that did not need to be done,” Kevin said, and it shows. The family moved in last year after renovations were complete.

The family has enjoyed the amenities the neighborhood has to offer. The house features easy access in and out of Kingsmill, as one of the closest streets to the Route 60 gate and very close to the 199 gate. Kevin also appreciates that the tennis courts and pool are located right at the front of the street, and the marina is just a little over a mile away.

Kevin’s favorite part about the house is how livable it is. Every inch of the 5,000 square foot house is finished, and a first and second floor master suite means you can have one level living or three level living.

“We love the fact that it can be as big as you want it to be or as comfortable as you want it to be,” Kevin said. “It gives you a lot of options.”
