Weather service issues severe weather alert Thursday afternoon

The National Weather Service is warning of a severe thunderstorm moving through Greater Williamsburg.

The storm could bring up to an inch of rain and dangerous lightning strikes, according to the NWS Wakefield office.

Motorists are advised to use caution when driving through the storm, as the heavy rains could bring rapid changes in road conditions. Ponding and minor flooding is possible.

Williamsburg, York and James City counties will be affected.
