As several inches of snow have fallen across Greater Williamsburg, James City County officials are calling for area residents to stay home Thursday.

The National Weather Service has reported five inches of snow fell on the City of Williamsburg by 6:30 a.m., according to National Weather Service Meteorologist Mike Rusnak.

Other parts of Greater Williamsburg saw as much as eight inches of snow, Rusnak said, creating hazardous road conditions.

As of 8:45 a.m. Thurday, the Virginia State Police had responded to 273 emergency calls. Troopers are currently responding to 26 disabled vehicles. More cars, trucks and vans have slid off the road since 6:15 a.m., according to a VSP news release.

Officials in both counties joined with the Virginia State Police to ask all drivers: stay off the roads.

“We don’t want anyone hurt,” York County spokeswoman Gail Whittaker wrote in an email. “It also allows VDOT to better clear our roads.”

VDOT crews are clearing streets in James City and York counties, and other vehicle traffic can present obstacles for plow-truck drivers and emergency vehicles, according to York County spokeswoman Gail Whittaker and a James City County News Release.

Only drive if it’s urgent and necessary, county and state officials say.
