Sgt. Adam Cooper of the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office is man who keeps an eye out for the little critters.
Wednesday afternoon the “heroic” Cooper happened to see some baby raccoons trying to cross Goodwin Neck Road, says spokesman Lt. Dennis Ivey.
“Sgt. Cooper helped this raccoon [pictured] escape a near death experience when he leaped into action,” according to a York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office Facebook post.
For Cooper’s part, he was on his regular beat, driving around in the Grafton area of York County. He first saw two baby raccoons in the middle of the road and called animal control, he said.
“I stopped and picked those two up and put them in my SUV,” Cooper said in an email to WYDaily. “While I was waiting on animal control I heard a third one which was in a bush. The third one then came out and I went over and picked that one up and put it with the other two.”
Cooper had to pick up one of the critters with gloves, as it was hissing at him, but the other two came easily, Ivey said.
The animals were transported to local animal control.
Cooper is known for his animal heroics and has saved many a critter including a turtle and a fawn, according to Ivey.
