Pedestrian struck and killed by westbound Amtrak train near Airport Rd.

A man died early Tuesday evening after being struck by an Amtrak passenger train in James City County as he walked across the tracks at the intersection of Richmond and Airport roads, authorities said.

Paramedics transported the man to Sentara Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, according to James City County Police Department spokeswoman Stephanie Williams. No other information on the man is available at this time.

Police arrived on the scene shortly before 6 p.m. to respond to a traffic accident at the intersection of Airport and Richmond roads.  The Amtrak train was heading west when the man was struck.  

The railroad crossing gates had been down at the time of the accident, according to Sgt. Michelle Anaya, with the Virginia State Police, which is investigating the incident.

Inspectors with CSX Railway also are on the scene, according to witnesses.

Airport Road between Richmond and Mooretown roads has been shut down and traffic is being detoured, while the investigation continues.
