A 26-year-old James City county woman is facing child abuse, drug and reckless driving charges after crashing a vehicle carrying marijuana, a smoking device and three children on News Road, police say.
According to James City County Police spokesperson Stephanie Williams, Heidi Richardson was arrested Monday after a two-month investigation by police, which linked Richardson to the vehicle at the crash site.
Officers were dispatched to the wreck, located 3500-block of News Road, around 5 p.m. Christmas Day, Williams said.
Witnesses told police the vehicle, a 1997 Infiniti, had rolled over and the driver pulled three children — ages 6, 10 and 11 — from the vehicle. Witnesses said the woman and children fled on foot through the woods.
A search of the vehicle revealed a bag of marijuana, a smoking device and a wallet containing a driver’s license and credit card belonging to Richardson. Further investigation revealed Richardson was the only adult in the vehicle at the time, Williams said.
The children were reported to have bumps and scratches as a result of the crash, Williams said.
Richardson is charged with three counts of child neglect/abuse, possession of marijuana and reckless driving.
She is scheduled to appear in Williamsburg/James City General District Court April 27 for driving and drug-related charges. She is scheduled to appear in Williamsburg/James City Circuit Court April 11 for an unrelated larceny and driving on a suspended license charge.
