Drivers making their way across Hampton Roads should watch out for potholes created by winter weather.
The Virginia Department of Transportation is working to fill potholes on interstates, primary and secondary roads. Potholes can become especially problematic during winter when there’s snow and ice on the ground and the temperatures are fluctuating.
Potholes are created when water seeps into the pavement and refreezes, creating cracks in the road. When the ice underneath the pavement melts it softens the pavement, creating potholes as vehicles pass over it, according to VDOT.
VDOT is asking drivers to report potholes when they see them by calling the Customer Care Center at 1-888-FOR-ROAD or by visiting my.vdot.virginia.gov.
VDOT doesn’t keep a running tally of the potholes they’ve fixed. VDOT spokesman Dave Forster said that the agency fixes potholes using the district’s $100 million maintenance budget.
