James City County Police and fire officials are investigating a break-in at a vacant house after they found stolen mail and packages, as well as burned items, inside the residence, police said.
Police officers were dispatched to a house in the 8400 block of Ashington Way Tuesday in response to a neighbor’s report, James City County Police spokeswoman Stephanie Williams said.
Officers found two basement windows ajar, and the screens had been cut out, she said.
Inside the home, police found various packages and mail from multiple addresses in the neighborhood, which are all believed to be stolen, Williams said.
In addition to the mail, Williams said several items had also been burned on top of the kitchen counters.
Batallion Chief Al Catlett said the fire department found evidence consistent with a small fire in the house, which had been put out by the time officials arrived. He did not specify what items had been set on fire, and said the incident is still under investigation.
Besides the mail and burned items, police did not find any other items inside the house, Williams said.
The incident is currently under investigation by both James City County Police and fire marshals.
