The James City County Police Department has set trick-or-treat hours in the county from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. this Halloween for children 12 and younger.
The agency has also released a list of safety tips and suggestions for parents and trick-or-treaters alike.
Police suggest dressing yourself and your child in costumes that are easy to walk in, non-flammable and highly visible. They also say old-fashioned masks should be traded for makeup to make it easier to see and breathe as trick-or-treaters haunt the streets.
The police recommend trick-or-treaters plan their routes ahead of time, and increase their visibility to drivers with flashlights or glowsticks.
Young trick-or-treaters should be supervised by their mummies and dads. Kid should never approach a home with its porch light off or enter the home of a stranger. When approaching a house with its porch light on, little ghouls and goblins should be wary of Jack O’Lanterns as they can be both a tripping and fire hazard.
The police remind parents that they should examine all candy to ensure that treats are in their original packaging as well as requesting the public notify them about any suspicious candy.
James City County Police also encourage motorists to watch out for pedestrians this Halloween, and for trick-or-treaters to cross streets at crosswalks.
