A Toano man pleaded guilty Thursday to impersonating a federal agent during a WJCC Circuit Court hearing earlier this year.
Luis Latorre-Roman II, 41, appeared as a witness during a sentencing February 24, where he claimed to be a special agent with the Department of Homeland Security. Latorre-Roman has never been a special agent with the Department of Homeland Security, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
The grand jury determined Latorre-Roman pretended to be a special agent to help the defendant receive a lesser sentence, according to an indictment from the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
Latorre-Roman was indicted May 10 and arrested by James City County police May 24.
He faces a maximum penalty of three years in prison. Latorre-Roman is scheduled to be sentenced October 3 in U.S. District Court.
